About the Marathon Flute Concert

In spring 2015, the UMFA board created a new scholarship program to support local flute students in their musical studies.  We invited all flutists to help us kick off the fundraising effort by participating in an 8-hour long Marathon Flute Concert at the Mall of America (Sears Court). We successfully raised more than $2500 to begin our scholarship program and began a new tradition.

We are proud to announce our fourth marathon concert on Saturday, October 27, 2018 to continue funding UMFA's scholarship program.  Please consider joining us as a performer, volunteer, or donor to help remove barriers to high-quality music education for local students.  Donations to the scholarship program are accepted year-round.

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped support this program.  Your time, energy, and generosity have provided life-changing opportunities for a growing number of young people in our area.

Instrument Donations:
Instrument donations (flutes and non-flutes) are welcomed at any time throughout the year through UMFA’s partner organizations, the MusicLink Foundation and Hopewell Music Cooperative North (see below). Instruments will be available to recipients of UMFA scholarships through participation in these programs.

About UMFA:
UMFA is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in the Twin Cities that aims to promote all aspects of flute-playing across the region.  All donations are tax-deductible and will go directly into the UMFA Scholarship Fund.

    How you can participate: 

  • Perform: All ages and levels are invited to play, from beginner students to professionals.  We would love to have ensembles as well as soloists, and any instrumental group is welcome as long as at least one flute is involved.  Non-"Western" flutes are welcomed as well.  See a past schedule of performers for ideas about programming.  Register below.
  • Volunteer: We have a variety of jobs to be done before, during, and after the concert.  Any amount of time you're willing to share is appreciated! Please submit this volunteer availability form if you're willing to help.
  • Donate: UMFA is accepting monetary donations for the scholarship program and instrument donations for its partner organizations--see below.  Our fundraising goal for this fall is $5000!
  • Spread the word by telling people about it and liking/re-sharing UMFA's facebook posts and printing/sharing our concert flyer!
  • Watch the show! 

Monetary Donations If you would like to help support the scholarship program, you may donate via check or online.  Checks should be made payable to Upper Midwest Flute Association (Please write "scholarship donation" on the memo line, and if you are giving in honor of a performer on the marathon concert, please include their name as well.). Checks can be mailed to Upper Midwest Flute Association, 6324 Decatur Ave N, Brooklyn Park, MN 55428.  You may also donate online on our GiveMN page.  Thank you for your generosity.

Instrument Donations
Instrument donations are welcomed at any time throughout the year.  UMFA’s partner organizations, the MusicLink Foundation and Hopewell Music Cooperative North, will be taking instrument donations of any kind (flutes and non-flutes) at the Marathon Flute Concert on Saturday, January 31st.  A designated number of flutes will be reserved for MusicLink students to be available to those with UMFA scholarships, and the rest of the instruments will go to Hopewell Music Cooperative North.

Deadline: By Saturday, September 30th at 11:59 pm (online and/or postmark if mailing donation check), you must submit the items below.  

  1. UMFA membership renewal
  2. Performer Application for marathon concert 
  3. Mall of America WaiverMinor / Adult forms.   To submit your waiver, email a scanned copy (you can use a free scanner app on your phone or take a well-lit photo where the paper fills up the screen) to umfascholarships@gmail.com.
  4. Mandatory minimum fundraising amount of $25/performer to go directly into scholarship fund (donation info below).  Additional donations are welcomed after the application deadline and throughout the year. 
  5. Sign up to volunteer (optional):  We need your help to make this a successful event!  We need people to help out as audience engagers, stagehands, MCs, low flute attendants, photographers, and greeters at the registration table. Join us for an hour or two and meet some fellow UMFA members!   Email volunteer@umfaflutes.org.
Need a collaborative pianist? We will provide a list of available pianists willing to play with performers in the marathon concert if needed.  Please email umfascholarships@gmail.com. 

 Halloween costumes/decor are welcome at the event!
